Where to Stay in Tofino

A quoted nightly rate in Tofino is not the final bill. Three taxes stack on top of whatever price a hotel, resort or rental quotes, and none of them is optional, so budget for the total rather than the headline figure.

Rates change by season, by the day of the week and by how far ahead you book, and a rate read on one day goes stale within weeks. Downtown and the harbour: this is the easiest base without wheels. West Coast Transit (BC Transit) runs the local bus, with an adult single fare of US$7.10 (C$10) for a day pass or US$3.55 (C$5) for a single ride.

Chesterman Beach, tinwis (MacKenzie Beach) and Cox Bay: these beach areas sit outside easy walking range of downtown, so the bus or a car matters here. If you drive, the District enforces beach pay parking daily from 8am to 11pm at Tonquin Beach, tinwis, Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay, at US$2.13 (C$3) an hour or US$10.65 (C$15) a day. There is no pay parking charge in the village itself.

Green Point and the national park beaches: a car or the bus gets you part of the way along the Pacific Rim corridor, then it is on foot to your site.

Clayoquot Sound: transit and a car both fail here. The only access is by boat or floatplane, roughly 45 minutes each way, which is why a lodge stay in the sound is a committed choice rather than a base for popping into town.

Vacation rentals in Tofino are regulated, not a free-for-all. The provincial Short-Term Rental Accommodations Act applies to Tofino, and the District can impose fines and tickets of up to US$35,488.50 (C$50,000) on an illegal listing. The Province launched a short-term rental registry in late 2024, and booking platforms are now required to remove listings that do not carry a valid registry number.

Every one of Tofino's four bases sits on or near an exposed Pacific-facing coastline with a genuine earthquake and tsunami risk from the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The District of Tofino publishes an official Tsunami Safety Guide and Evacuation Map identifying hazard zones and safe assembly areas across the whole town, available through the District's own Emergency Preparedness pages and through Tourism Tofino.

The village sits on slightly higher ground than the beach areas, which does not remove the risk but changes the evacuation route. MacKenzie Beach, Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay are directly on the sand, so a hotel, resort or campground there should brief you on its own route at check-in. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, reached only by boat or floatplane, follows its own remote emergency protocol, separate from the town's evacuation map.

Whichever of the four areas you choose, everyone reaches Tofino the same few ways. Harbour Air flies Vancouver's Coal Harbour to Tofino Harbour in roughly 45 minutes, spring through summer, switching to a wheeled winter service between Vancouver International Airport's South Terminal and Tofino-Long Beach Airport. Pacific Coastal Airlines runs the year-round alternative on the same YVR South to YAZ route, about 46 minutes, with multiple daily departures.

Driving in on Highway 4, the Kennedy Hill Safety Improvement Project finished in spring 2023, though planned closures still happen, so check DriveBC before you leave. Island Link's Tofino Express Bus runs the Nanaimo-Port Alberni-Ucluelet-Tofino corridor daily for travellers without a car. Clayoquot Sound is the one exception: none of these mainland or Highway 4 routes reaches it, since the sound is boat or floatplane only from Tofino's own harbour, a separate leg after you have already arrived in town. Book your onward transport (bus seat, ferry sailing or flight) before you lock in a room, since the arrival method can decide which of the four areas is actually convenient to reach on your first night.
