Vancouver to Tofino: Ferry, Drive or Seaplane

From Horseshoe Bay, north of downtown Vancouver, BC Ferries sails to Departure Bay in Nanaimo. From Tsawwassen, south of the city and closer to the US border, BC Ferries sails to Duke Point, also near Nanaimo. Both routes require online booking and payment in advance, and both land you within a short drive of the start of Highway 4.

The adult fare at the terminal is US$14.91 (C$21) each way on either route, with Saver passenger fares from US$10.65 (C$15) when demand allows, and a vehicle with driver runs US$34.78 to US$70.27 (C$49 to C$99) in the Saver band, moving with how full the sailing is. Once you clear the terminal, the drive to Tofino runs roughly 195 to 200 km, mostly on Highway 4 through Port Alberni. Picking Horseshoe Bay or Tsawwassen

Horseshoe Bay suits a start from downtown Vancouver or the North Shore, and Departure Bay sits inside Nanaimo itself, so you are already in traffic once you land. Tsawwassen suits drivers coming up from the US border or from Richmond and the airport side of the city, and Duke Point sits a little south of Nanaimo, which can mean less city driving before you pick up Highway 4 westbound. Neither terminal is closer to Tofino once you are past Nanaimo.

Fares are the same on both routes at the same booking class, so pick the terminal nearer to where your trip actually starts.

Harbour Air Seaplane From Coal Harbour

Harbour Air flies float planes from Coal Harbour, in downtown Vancouver, directly onto Tofino Harbour in about 45 minutes. One-way fares start from US$98.66 (C$139). This water service runs in spring and summer; in winter, Harbour Air switches to a wheeled service departing Vancouver International Airport's South Terminal instead of the downtown harbour.

It is the fastest route on this page and the only one that starts inside the city rather than at an airport or ferry terminal, which matters if your trip begins downtown and you want to skip the drive to Tsawwassen or Horseshoe Bay entirely.

Pacific Coastal Airlines, Year-Round

Pacific Coastal Airlines flies scheduled Saab 340 aircraft from Vancouver International Airport's South Terminal to Tofino-Long Beach Airport (YAZ), about 46 minutes in the air. This route runs every month of the year, which makes it the reliable option when Harbour Air's seasonal water service is not running and the weather rules out a small floatplane. Island Link runs the Tofino Express, an intercity coach along the Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Ucluelet and Tofino corridor. It does not start in Vancouver, so a bus-only trip still means crossing on BC Ferries to reach Nanaimo first, then connecting onto the coach. Island Link's own site does not publish a fare table for this route, only a booking tool, so no bus fare is printed here.

A separate older service, branded VI Connector and Tofino Bus, is not currently operating, which is worth knowing if an outdated blog post still names it. For a group that wants to skip both the ferry-terminal logistics and the coach connection, the Nanaimo to Tofino private car transfer is a single booking, door to door from the Nanaimo area, that also stops at Cathedral Grove.

Travelling as a group of two to four and would rather not drive or manage ferry timing at all? The private car transfer from the Nanaimo area is a single booked price that includes the road leg most other options leave to you.

The Kennedy Hill realignment project on Highway 4 finished in spring 2023, which removed the section that used to force single-lane alternating traffic for years. The road still closes for planned maintenance work on some days, so check DriveBC for current conditions before you leave the ferry terminal or the airport, not after. No official source publishes an exact driving-time figure from either ferry terminal to Tofino that this page treats as reliable, so plan around the roughly 195 to 200 km distance rather than a quoted number of hours, and allow extra time if you are stopping at Cathedral Grove or Port Alberni on the way.
