Tonquin Beach

Tourism Tofino's own beaches page states the trail to Tonquin is approximately 250 metres long, with two sets of stairs and a scenic wooden bridge, an actual metered figure rather than the round '10-15 minute' estimate used for it elsewhere. The District of Tofino names two separate access routes to the same cove: the Tonquin Beach Trail, a boardwalk and stairs starting from Tonquin Park Road, and a second Tonquin Trail that starts near the Tofino Community Hall. Either way it is short.

The path descends through coastal forest before opening onto the cove, and the stairs mean this is not a beach a stroller or wheelchair reaches without help.

Tonquin is not an open stretch of sand like Chesterman or Cox Bay. It is a small cove, ideal for swimming, sunbathing and relaxation per the District's own description, with distinctive rock walls and a small rock island offshore that give it a closed-in, sheltered feel the surf beaches do not have. The District names swimming, sunbathing and relaxation as its fit, which lines up with the cove shape: this is not the beach for a long walk, it is the beach for sitting down once you arrive.

Public washrooms sit at the Tonquin Park Trailhead, but not at the Community Hall access, so plan accordingly if you are walking in from that side.

Of every page on this site, this is the only place an official source names sunset directly. The District of Tofino's own beaches page describes the Tonquin Trail's small lookouts as having views of Wickaninnish Island and sunsets, which makes this cove the closest thing Tofino has to an officially recommended sunset spot, rather than a claim this site is making on its own. Since the trail faces open water to the west, the lookouts along the way work for the view even if you do not go all the way down the stairs to the beach itself.

The District of Tofino does not allow beach fires at Tonquin, the same rule as Cox Bay and unlike Chesterman where fires are allowed subject to current restrictions. There have been no lifeguards or Surf Guards on any Pacific Rim area beach since 2012, and that applies here too, small and sheltered as the cove looks. The rock walls and the offshore island mean the water here behaves differently from an open beach, with currents around the rocks that are not obvious from the sand.

Keep to the beach itself rather than climbing the rock walls, which are wet and uneven. The full safety picture for the whole area is on Tofino safety. The District's own guidance is to be CoastSmart: learn to recognise riptides, strong currents and unexpected waves, and take personal responsibility for your own safety here, since the cove's rock walls make currents harder to read than on an open beach.

Tonquin is one of only two beaches in Tofino where beach fires are banned outright. If you want a legal beach fire, head to Mackenzie Beach, now officially named tinwis, or Chesterman Beach. Those are the only two spots where fires are permitted, and only between 8 AM and 10 PM, subject to any current fire ban. Even there, fires must sit in a clean-burning appliance raised off the sand, stay under 0.6 metres high and wide, keep at least 3 metres from vegetation, and be fully extinguished before you leave. At Tonquin, skip the idea entirely.

Dogs are welcome but must stay on a leash at all times. This is the same District-wide rule that applies at every Tofino beach, and it exists partly to protect the migratory shorebirds that use these beaches as resting points. Keep the leash on the boardwalk and stairs too, not just the sand.

Alcohol is prohibited on all public property in Tofino, including this cove, at any time of day.

Drone use is legally restricted across the District. Tonquin sits close to the village and near the Tofino Harbour Water Aerodrome, so leave the drone at home.

Smoking and vaping are banned within 6 metres of recreation areas, including beaches, under District Bylaw No. 1249. Finally, overnight camping in a vehicle is not allowed in any public area of Tofino, including parking lots and streets.

The District of Tofino asks everyone on its beaches to leave no trace so the shoreline stays enjoyable for everyone. One habit it encourages is the five-minute beach clean-up. Even small amounts of marine debris get removed, because litter harms marine life and pollutes the ocean.

Tonquin is the beach closest to downtown and gets the most casual foot traffic of any beach in this group. That steady stream of short visits is exactly why the small-litter habit matters most here. A wrapper dropped on a busy beach gets seen and picked up by hundreds of people a day.

The District's Pack In, Pack Out guidance is simple. Pick up after your dog and dispose of waste properly. Pack out all garbage, including small items like food wrappers, plastic or cigarette butts.
