Tofino Resorts: The Surf Coast South of the Village

The Wickaninnish Inn sits at 500 Osprey Lane at Chesterman Beach, about 5 km from downtown Tofino, per the inn's own site. It is the only property in the Tofino area holding a Michelin Key, at one Key, in the Michelin Guide's 2026 list for the Vancouver region. Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge, the region's other Michelin-rated property, holds three Keys but sits across the water in Clayoquot Sound with no road access, covered separately on where to stay in Tofino.

The water off Chesterman Beach and Cox Bay is cold all year. Parks Canada puts the water temperature at these beaches between 7°C and 14°C and recommends a wetsuit of at least 4mm in summer and 5mm in winter. Booties, gloves and a hood are highly recommended. Summer brings moderate waves better suited to learners, while winter conditions challenge experienced surfers. No lifeguards or surf guards are on duty at any of these beaches.

For the recovery half of the day, the Ancient Cedars Spa at the Wickaninnish Inn sits ocean-level in the Pointe Building at 500 Osprey Lane, open daily 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. It is an adult-oriented space. Children 11 and under are not permitted, and guests aged 12 to 15 are welcome with a guardian present for side-by-side treatments. A resort stay on this coast lets you finish a cold-water surf session and walk straight into a hot spa, which a hotel in the village cannot offer.

Chesterman Beach has two vehicle access points. Lynn Road serves North Chesterman and Chesterman Beach Road serves South Chesterman. Both have public washrooms and shower facilities. On foot or by bike, use the Multi-Use Path. North and South Chesterman are linked by over 2.7 km (1.7 miles) of sand.

Cox Bay has a level boardwalk from the parking lot to the north end of the beach. A 5-minute trail via Maltby Road reaches the south end. Washrooms and showers are on site. Beach fires are not allowed at Cox Bay.

Pay parking is enforced daily from 8 am to 11 pm year-round at both beaches. Rates are US$2.13 (C$3) an hour, US$10.65 (C$15) a day, or US$106.47 (C$150) a year. Pay at the meter, with the HonkMobile app, or by PayByPhone (1-888-680-7275). No overnight camping in vehicles.

Frank Island sits off the end of Chesterman Beach, joined by a sandbar at low tide. The island is privately owned with resident access only. Visitors can cross the sandbar at low tide but should not treat the island itself as public land. Frank Island overnight parking is a separate monthly permit at US$42.59 (C$60) a month, aimed at residents rather than visitors.

Cox Bay is described by the District as spectacular for winter storm watching, and North Chesterman Beach gives you smaller waves with dramatic spray at the rocky outcrops. On Cox Bay, Pettinger Point is the viewpoint for breaking waves.

Storm watching here comes with rules. Tourism Tofino stresses that no beach has lifeguards. Avoid standing on tidal rocks because of rogue or sneaker waves. During King Tides, which fall around full or new moon, time your visit around low tide. Stay clear of driftwood logs, which waves can toss. Skip wooded paths on high-wind days.

Parks Canada asks surfers on these beaches to use a leash, strongly advises a surf-specific helmet, and publishes a Surfer's Code: do not drop in on another surfer's wave, paddle wide around others catching a wave, keep control of your board at all times, and communicate with other water users. Cox Bay draws the biggest crowds in the water, so the code matters most exactly where a resort-coast trip usually starts a surf session.

Tourism Tofino's own beach page also notes a carving shed near the Wickaninnish Inn at Chesterman Beach, and that both ends of the beach are popular for surf lessons, a landmark worth knowing if a resort itinerary includes a lesson booked through the property rather than a boat tour.

A resort room at Chesterman Beach or Cox Bay sits directly on an exposed Pacific-facing coastline, which carries a genuine earthquake and tsunami risk from the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The District of Tofino publishes an official Tsunami Safety Guide and Evacuation Map identifying hazard zones and safe assembly areas, available through the District's own Emergency Preparedness pages and through Tourism Tofino.
