Tofino in 3 Days: A Timed Water, Road and Hot Springs Plan

Most of the boat tours on this site use this one check-in point at Tofino Resort + Marina, at the bottom of the hill. Arrive 30 to 45 minutes before departure to park, use the washroom and hear the safety briefing. The harbour is a five-minute walk from most of the village, so you do not need the car again until lunch.

If the morning boat is your only tour of the day, ask the Adventure Hosts about the free raincheck policy before you board, so you know the terms if no whales show.

This 2.5-hour trip runs out of the harbour toward Flores Island, Vargas Island and Long Beach with a guide narrating the marine ecology. The operator reports a 95% sighting success rate and a free raincheck if no whales appear. Grey whales pass offshore on the northbound migration from late February through May, and a resident group of a few hundred stays in Clayoquot Sound year-round, so sightings are not limited to spring.

Note the fine print. The morning departures run on an open Zodiac, with waterproof suits provided, so dress in warm layers underneath. Book the whale watching tour ahead in summer.

You are back at the harbour by midday. The village grid is compact, so walk rather than drive. Tacofino began here in June 2009 as a single orange food truck at 1184 Pacific Rim Highway and the original truck still operates.

SoBo started in 2003 as a purple truck and has served from 311 Neill Street since 2007. Wolf in the Fog opened at 150 4th Street in summer 2014 and was named Best New Restaurant in Canada that year by enRoute Magazine. Tofino Brewing Company has poured since April 2011.

Every option sits within a short walk of the water.

The Tonquin Trail connects downtown Tofino to Tonquin Beach and is commonly described as a 10 to 15 minute walk from the town centre, ending in boardwalk and stairs. No official metered trail length exists, so treat any kilometre figure you see elsewhere as invention. The beach is outside the national park, so no park pass is needed, and it faces west into Clayoquot Sound.

This is the low-effort half of the day after a morning on the water. Bring a layer. The trail sits in shade and the wind comes straight off the sound.

End day one facing the Pacific. Tofino's sunset beaches are a short drive or bus ride south of the village, and the light in the hour before dark is the reason many visitors extend their stay. West Coast Transit charges a single adult cash fare of US$3.55 (C$5.00), or a DayPASS of US$7.10 (C$10.00) for adults 19 to 64, which may already cover you if you bought one in the morning.

The Long Beach Unit of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve sits between Tofino and Ucluelet along the highway, and a vehicle day pass is required to access it. Pass the fee point early. No Parks Canada page publishes a numeric cap on parking spaces at the unit's lots, which is a genuine gap rather than an omission.

Two loops of 1 km each sit on opposite sides of the highway, on boardwalk and stairs through old-growth spruce and cedar. Do one or both. An hour here covers either loop at an easy pace, and the boardwalk keeps your boots out of the mud.

Black bears, wolves and cougars are all present in the park. Parks Canada directs hikers to its general wildlife safety page, and standard practice applies: make noise, keep food stored, and check current trail conditions before you set out. No specific encounter statistics are published, so treat any you read as unsourced.

Long Beach is inside the national park, not in the town of Tofino, which surprises visitors who assumed the opposite. It runs roughly 16 km, a widely repeated round figure rather than a metered official number, and it is one of the longest continuous sand beaches on the island's west coast. There have been no lifeguards or Surf Guards here since 2012, when federal funding for the 40-year-old service was cut, and Parks Canada's current position is that its beaches are unsupervised. The centre is open daily 9:30 to 16:30 from September 1 to October 12, 2026, and it closes Wednesday September 16 through Friday September 25, 2026 for a cultural observance. Winter hours are not published, so check Parks Canada before visiting outside this window. The exhibits cover Nuu-chah-nulth culture and the natural history of the coast, and Wickaninnish Beach stretches out front for a short walk.

Chesterman sits outside the park on the road back into town, so no pass is checked and the stop costs only parking. It is best at low tide, when the sand widens and the reef flats emerge, and it is the town's most reliable sunset beach. Like every beach in the area it has had no lifeguards since 2012, so treat the water accordingly.

If you would rather close the day on foot, the 25 km paved ʔapsčiik t̓ašii pathway connects Tofino and Ucluelet and was finished in summer 2024, built with the Tla-o-qui-aht and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. Our beaches guide compares all of them.

The Hot Springs Cove boat tour checks in at the Marine Adventure Centre like every other Tofino Resort + Marina departure. Eat a real breakfast and pack a day bag. Two facts matter more here than on any other day.

There is no potable water on site, so bring your own, and there are only composting toilets and change huts at the dock end. Dress for a covered boat and a rainforest walk. Cancel for free up to 24 hours before the start time, which matters because this coast does produce days when the crossing is not worth it.

The trip runs about six hours round trip aboard a 12-seat covered cabin cruiser, with a wildlife cruise built into the crossing through Clayoquot Sound. The sound is Hesquiaht territory up here as well as Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht country further south, and the park you are heading for sits between the Hesquiat Peninsula and Flores Island. Watch for the landmarks that make the run worth it even before the springs: forested islands, rocky islets and the open Pacific appearing as you round the corner north.

Hot Springs Cove is the only stop on this itinerary with no road and no bridge. Boat or floatplane are the only ways in.

A boardwalk through old-growth forest runs about half an hour each way to pools that cascade down a rock face, cooling as they meet the sea. BC Parks charges no entry fee for the park, renamed Nism̓aakqin Park in 2025 from Maquinna Marine Provincial Park. Your soak runs about two hours.

Two plain warnings. The rocks at the springs are slippery, and the boardwalk has stairs and uneven terrain, so the trip is not suitable for wheelchair users or anyone with mobility impairments. There is no potable water on site.

The return crossing puts you back at the harbour by mid-afternoon. Do not schedule anything else for day three. You will have been on the water, on a boardwalk and in hot water, and the town will still be there tomorrow morning if you have a fourth day.
