Day Trips From Tofino: By Road and By Water

Ucluelet sits 40-42 km south of Tofino along the Pacific Rim Highway, about a 30-40 minute drive. Its own draw is the Wild Pacific Trail, a network of coastal segments including the 2.5 km Lighthouse Loop past Amphitrite Lighthouse, plus the shorter Brown's Beach (3 km), Big Beach (1 km) and Artists Loop (0.5 km) sections. The Ucluelet Aquarium runs 1 March to 30 November, 10:00-16:30, adult US$12.78 (C$18), and releases its local sea life back into the wild each season rather than keeping permanent residents.

A half day covers the aquarium and the Lighthouse Loop; a full day adds the other trail segments and lunch in town.

Cathedral Grove, officially part of MacMillan Provincial Park, is a stand of old-growth Douglas fir directly beside Highway 4 between Port Alberni and the coast, a free day-use stop rather than a booked attraction. Port Alberni is the town most visitors pass through on the drive in from Nanaimo, worth a stop for a meal or fuel rather than a full day trip from Tofino itself, since it sits well over an hour back up the highway. Neither of these needs advance booking, and both are more practical as a stop on the way in or out than as a dedicated round trip from Tofino.

Clayoquot Sound and Hot Springs Cove sit north of Tofino with no road connection, so the only way to make either a day trip is by boat or floatplane, both bookable directly from Tofino Harbour. The Clayoquot Sound RHIB safari runs 3 hours for $139.00, and the Hot Springs Cove trip runs a full 6 hours for $222.00, including roughly 2 hours of soaking time at the springs. Both leave from the same harbour as the whale and bear watching tours, so a multi-day trip can spread these across separate mornings rather than trying to combine them.

The Highway 4 Kennedy Hill Safety Improvement Project, which caused years of single-lane alternating traffic on the stretch between Port Alberni and the coast, finished in spring 2023. That does not mean the road is closure-free: planned maintenance closures still happen on Highway 4 without warning months in advance. Booking The Boat Days

Hot Springs Cove is the Hot Springs Cove tour with wildlife cruise, a 6-hour round trip costing $222.00. The Clayoquot Sound safari is a 3-hour RHIB run priced at $139.00, operating only May 1 to September 30 and needing at least 4 participants to depart. Both leave from the Tofino harbour docks, and everything on the water sits inside Clayoquot Sound.

History Of The Grove

H.R. MacMillan, a forester and timber businessman, donated the 136-hectare property in 1944. The grove had carried the name Cathedral Grove since the 1920s, reportedly coined by Governor General Viscount Willingdon in 1928. It became a Class A provincial park in 1947.

Today it is MacMillan Provincial Park. Park records give the current protected area as 301 hectares (740 acres), with the old-growth grove itself covering about 157 hectares (390 acres), larger than the original 1944 gift because of later additions to the park.

The Trees And The Road

Some Douglas firs here are more than 800 years old, and the largest measures over 9 metres in circumference. Highway 4 runs straight through the park, splitting the grove into north and south sides, so you cross the road on foot to see both halves. The grove recorded 543,735 visits in the 2017-18 reporting year, a scale that explains why the highway shoulders fill fast on a summer day.

Crossing on foot between the north and south groves means watching for highway traffic at a spot with no signal, so cross with care rather than assuming drivers expect pedestrians.

Safety, Fees And Parking

BC Parks warns visitors off the trails on windy days because of falling branches and trees. Storms in December 2018 and November 2024 caused damage and some trail closures. There is no day-use fee and no camping.

Parking runs along narrow highway shoulders with no published lot size, so arrive early on a summer day. None of these costs or closures are announced in advance on a fixed schedule, so treat a Cathedral Grove stop as a flexible add-on to the drive rather than a timed booking.

A Forestry Town On The Longest Inlet

Port Alberni had 18,259 residents at the 2021 Census. It sits at the head of the Alberni Inlet, Vancouver Island's longest inlet, which runs down to Barkley Sound. The town grew around forestry and sawmilling.

An Anderson sawmill began operating in 1861, and the pulp mill opened in 1946. Port Alberni sits on Highway 4, so you drive through it on the way to Tofino. That inlet geography is also why the town became the natural stop for fuel, food and a stretch of the legs on the long drive out to the coast.

The 1964 Tsunami

The 1964 Good Friday earthquake sent a tsunami up the inlet. Water rose about 30 cm (1 ft) a minute, reaching roughly 3 m (10 ft) above the high-water mark. Property damage was significant, but there were no fatalities in the town.

The same regional tsunami risk is why Tofino, further down the coast, publishes its own evacuation guidance, covered on Tofino safety. The event remains a reference point for tsunami preparedness on this stretch of coast.

Sproat Lake Detour

Sproat Lake, about 10 km west of town, holds ancient petroglyph carvings. It is a possible stop if you have spare time on the drive in. It sits just off Highway 4, an easy stop before or after Port Alberni itself if the drive allows for a short break.

Bring your own transport, since the lake sits off the direct route and is not served by the coach corridor that runs through Port Alberni itself.
