A Town Built On The Sea

European contact began in 1787, when Charles William Barkley, captain of the Imperial Eagle, reached the harbour while trading sea otter pelts. Barkley Sound, the body of water at Ucluelet's doorstep, carries his name. Through the 1800s and early 1900s the town grew on sealing and fishing.

When those industries faded, the economy shifted toward tourism: whale watching, kayaking, surfing and hiking. The harbour is still a working one. Fishing boats and small craft share the water with tour vessels, and that working waterfront is part of the character you notice on arrival.

The community was incorporated as a village on 26 February 1952 and became a District Municipality in 1997.

Size, Name And First Nations Context

Ucluelet had 2,066 residents at the 2021 Census, up 20.3% from 1,717 in 2016. Tofino had 2,516 in the same census, so the two towns are of similar scale, which surprises visitors who expect Ucluelet to be a village. The name comes from Yuułuʔił, Nuu-chah-nulth for "people of the safe harbour".

The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet First Nation) government is based at Hitacu just south of the townsite, and the aquarium sits on their traditional territory. That name, safe harbour, explains the town's geography. Unlike Tofino, which faces open Clayoquot Sound, Ucluelet wraps around a protected inlet.

Practical consequence: kayak tours here run in sheltered water, which makes them a gentler first paddle than open-coast trips. Pronunciation is "yoo-KLOO-let".

What The Layout Means For Your Day

The town is compact. Main Street runs along the harbour, the aquarium stands at 180 Main Street, the small craft harbour is a few minutes further, and the Wild Pacific Trail threads the shoreline at the edge of town. You can park once and walk most of what matters.

That compactness is the strongest argument for a day trip. In Tofino the highlights spread along the highway and the beach accesses. In Ucluelet the trail, the aquarium, the harbour and the shops sit within a small radius, so you spend your time doing things rather than driving between them.

The drive is simple. Take Highway 4, the Pacific Rim Highway, south through Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The distance is 40 to 42 km and takes about 30 to 40 minutes in normal conditions. The Kennedy Hill safety works on Highway 4 are complete, finished in spring 2023, and the later resurfacing project ended in 2024, so there is no standing closure schedule tied to either. Check DriveBC on the day for short-term maintenance, because it does happen.

You pass two things worth knowing about on the way. The Long Beach Unit of the national park reserve sits between the towns, so if you have a Parks Canada day pass you can stop at the beach on the way down or back. And Tofino-Long Beach Airport sits mid-corridor, which tells you the drive is flat and fast by west coast standards.

There is a second option with no car at all. The ʔapsčiik ṭašii pathway is a 25 km paved multi-use route through the park connecting the two towns for walkers and cyclists, built with the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation and the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. The final 1.5 km segment into Ucluelet was completed in summer 2024. Ride it one way and arrange a pickup, or ride out and back if you have the legs. Either way you get an entirely different view of the park than the highway gives. If you are flying into the region rather than driving from Nanaimo, the airport between the towns is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from downtown Tofino, and Ucluelet is little further.

If you are not driving at all, the same Highway 4 corridor that brings you into Tofino from Nanaimo and Port Alberni continues on to Ucluelet, so a coach service on that route can drop you at either end without a rental car. Confirm the current schedule and fare with the operator directly, since neither is published as a fixed figure on this site's sources. What that means in practice for a day tripper based in Tofino. Ucluelet gives you the Wild Pacific Trail, which has no equivalent in Tofino: a continuous clifftop path past a lighthouse with Barkley Sound below. It gives you the collect-and-release aquarium, which is a different model from anything on the Tofino waterfront. And its kayak tours run in protected harbour water, which suits first-timers and families better than an open-coast paddle. Tofino, meanwhile, has the surf culture, the in-town beaches outside the park, and its own tours.

On cost, the honest answer is that the headline attractions cost similar money wherever you book, and the aquarium's US$12.78 (C$18.00) adult admission is not far off other paid attractions in the region. The cheapest excellent thing in Ucluelet is free: the trail. If you only have one day outside Tofino, spend it here. If you have three, split them. The deciding question is how much of the Wild Pacific Trail you want and whether a boat trip fits.

Two adjustments. The aquarium is closed December through February, so a winter day trip is the Lighthouse Loop and the harbour only, no aquarium stop. And both boat tours cancel for bad weather with a refund, so build slack into a full day trip if the forecast is uncertain, rather than scheduling a tight connection back to Tofino.

The small craft harbour at the bottom of town still does what it always has: fishing boats moor there, gear gets loaded and unloaded, and the working rhythm of the place has not been dressed up for visitors. Walk the docks at 200 Hemlock Street before or after a kayak tour and you are as likely to see a crew mending nets as a tour group boarding. That mix, working harbour and visitor economy sharing the same water, is different from Tofino's harbour, where whale watching and floatplane traffic dominate.

Main Street runs one block back from the water and connects the harbour to the aquarium and the start of the Wild Pacific Trail. It is short enough to walk end to end in ten minutes without stopping, which is part of why a day trip here does not feel rushed even on a tight schedule. The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government, based at Hitacu just south of the townsite, is the local First Nation authority whose traditional territory includes the townsite and the aquarium's site, and whose name gives the town its own: people of the safe harbour.
