The Low-Tide Buffet

Coastal black bears forage along the shoreline of Clayoquot Sound's sheltered inlets at low tide. As the water drops, they work the exposed rocks, turning them over to eat the crabs and invertebrates underneath. This is a reliable, repeatable behaviour, which is exactly what makes bear watching by boat work in Tofino.

The bears come to the same shoreline at the same tidal stage most days, and a boat that knows where to look can be waiting for them.

Why Departures Follow The Tide, Not The Clock

Because the feeding happens at low tide, bear tours time their departures to the tide table rather than running fixed daily slots. Low tide moves roughly 50 minutes later each day, so a tour that leaves at 8am one week might leave near midday the next. Check your confirmation email for the exact departure time rather than assuming a set hour, and plan the rest of that day's Tofino schedule around it.

Bears Are Part Of A Bigger Shoreline Picture

Black bears, wolves and cougars are all present in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and on Clayoquot Sound's shoreline. Parks Canada publishes no specific encounter statistics for any of these species and links instead to its general wildlife safety guidance, which applies to anyone on foot along the coast. On The Water

The dedicated bear watching tour runs 2.5 hours door to door from the Marine Adventure Centre. That is enough time to run into the sheltered inlets, find bears working the shoreline at low tide and spend real time watching before heading back. The wildlife safari runs a full 3 hours, and part of that extra time goes to covering more ground in a faster boat, since the route follows wherever wildlife activity is strongest rather than a fixed bear plan.

Planning Around It

Give yourself a buffer before and after. Departure times shift with the tide, so do not book something that starts 20 minutes after your bear tour is supposed to leave. Add the trip from your accommodation to the Tofino Resort + Marina docks, check-in with the Adventure Hosts, and getting back into dry clothes afterwards.

A safe block for either boat is most of a morning or most of an afternoon.

You meet at the Marine Adventure Centre at the bottom of the hill in Tofino, at Tofino Resort + Marina, and check in with the Adventure Hosts inside. Because departure is tied to low tide, confirm your exact start time in advance and arrive early. Dress in layers, since the operator does not state whether wet-weather gear is provided.

Even on a dry day, wind on the water in the inlets gets cold.

The Boat And The Group

This is a small-group Zodiac boat, which is the point. A small boat can slide quietly into the sheltered inlets and hold a position along the shore without crowding, and everyone aboard is close enough to see a bear turning over rocks. The guide narrates throughout, covering bear behaviour and the local ecology, so you leave knowing what the foraging actually means rather than just having photographed it.

The 145 cm Height Rule

The tour is not suitable for anyone under 4 ft 8 in (145 cm). The operator states the limit without publishing a detailed reason, so treat the stated rule as the rule rather than guessing at exceptions. Practically, a height minimum on a small open boat usually comes down to how the boat type and its safety gear fit the person wearing it.

Out On The Water

From the docks the boat runs through the sheltered inlets of Clayoquot Sound, following the exposed shoreline where the low tide has pulled the water back. The guide scans the rocks, cuts the engine when a bear is spotted, and you drift and watch. Sightings concentrate on bears feeding, so you may watch one animal for a long stretch rather than racing between several.
